We honestly thought that the MX-5 RF (short for ‘Retractable Fastback’) was merely a design exercise when Mazda showed it to the public earlier this year. I guess we were wrong, because they’re really putting it into production.
The MX-5 RF is still the ultimate lightweight roadster like its soft top counterpart, except with a foldable hardtop. This engineering masterpiece cuts the lid into 3 pieces that when stowed, leaves behind the c-pillars that turns it into a targa top. Mazda also designed it as not to disrupt the roadster’s original lines, while turning it into a fastback and adding 5 mm to the MX-5’s overall height.
Fancy.
While these beautiful hardtop Miatas are expected to hit showrooms worldwide in 2017, Mazda is offering a special edition for those extra special clientele who can’t wait.
The so-called ‘MX-5 RF Launch Edition’ will be built in limited quantity – 1,000 examples to be exact. All will come with a Machine Gray Metallic exterior, Auburn Nappa leather interior, and a hand-painted black roof panel. It also looks like a 2.0L SkyActiv-G engine is included in the package (not the smaller 1.5L version) with an option for a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission.
Now here’s the catch. If you want one, the MX-5 RF Launch Edition will only be made available to “Mazda’s most loyal customers.” These select group of people will be notified via e-mail with an offer to buy one. And only if there are any left will Mazda offer it to the general public.
