AAP confirms 2018 FIA Sport Conference to be held in Manila

Every year, the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) gathers its delegates and stakeholders from all over the world where they discuss and plan the future of motorsports. They call this the FIA Sport Conference and it’s been going on since 2013. The very first one was held in the UK, then in Germany, followed by Mexico, Italy, and last year in Switzerland.

Now the Automobile Association Philippines (AAP) tells us that the next one is happening, of all places, here in Manila.

Wait, what?

Yes, it’s confirmed. First time to be held in Asia, the 2018 FIA Sport Conference will take place from June 4 to 6 where 400+ representatives from National Sporting Authorities (ASN) are expected to fly to the Philippines. That includes partner mobility clubs from 143 countries as well as some VVIPs such as current FIA President Jean Todt as we’d imagine.

Although we don’t know yet who the other VVIPs will be, last year’s FIA Sport Conference had the names Stefano Domenicali, Toto Wolff, Sir Patrick Head, Bruno Senna, and Mark Webber in the attendance list. Just imagine who we’ll see in Manila in a few month’s time.

But the conference is not a meet-and-greet session for fans. These guys mean business where key decision-makers, event promoters, and leading figures from racing and rallying put their heads together. The main topic is said to be the future trends and opportunities in motorsport, while touching on road safety. Other possible activities during the 3-day event include drifting, autocross, slalom, e-karting, and the FIA-certified Gran Turismo Asian Regional Finals Championship.

The 2018 FIA Sport Conference is hosted by the AAP with the support of the Department of Tourism (DOT). Petron will be its official fuel partner with SMC Asia Car Distributors Corporation (BMW Philippines) and Hyundai Asia Resources, Inc. (HARI) as logistics partners.

A turnover ceremony was held last week between FIA Sport Conference Project Director Frederique Trouve and AAP President Gus Lagman. FIA Events Manager Martin Lalande, DOT Undersecretary Allan Canizal, FIA SC 2018 National Organizing Council Committee Government Sector Chair/DOT Assistant Secretary Frederick Alegre, National Organizing Council Committee Private Sector Chair/AAP Trustee and Tourism and Travel Committee Chair Mina T. Gabor, and Co-Chair/AAP Trustee and Motorsport Chair Mandy Eduque were also there to witness the event.

“AAP has been very active in participating in FIA conferences and we have seen their loyalty and motivation in promoting motor sport among the youth through efforts such as the Motor Sport Development Program. They have also organized many activities in terms of training in road safety,” said Trouve.
