The Quiñones siblings Miguel and Shasha are jumping the gun this 2022. Whilst the local racing season isn’t scheduled to begin ’til April, they’re putting in extra miles to get ahead of the competition by entering the Rotax MAX Challenge Malaysia (RMCM) this weekend.
The championship overseas kicks off this March 12/13 at the Morac Adventure Park in Langkawi. It serves as the season opener for a 6-round 2022 calendar, but the Quiñones family made it clear that they have no intent of joining the full season. The one-off outing merely serves as a chance for both Miguel and Shasha to train ahead of another busy year and sharpen their skills against some of the best karters in the region.
Miguel and Shasha are now both in Seniors, which means they’ll be competing on the same grid and for position. Whether this will be a case of sibling rivalry or sibling revelry we’ll find out after the race weekend in Malaysia.
They’ll be competing under the Philippine flag with Double R Motorsports (DRM Racing Team) whom they’ve raced with on several occasions in the past. Race 1 will be held on Saturday (March 11) followed by Race 2 on Sunday (March 12), utilizing the 1.200km Morac Adventure Park’s clockwise layout.
Miguel Quiñones has a busy year ahead in 2022. The 18-year-old is scheduled to compete in the Rotax MAX Challenge Philippines, ROK GP Philippines, with some stints overseas if possible in the Asian Karting Open Championship (AKOC) and IAME Series Southeast Asia. Apart from karting, he also has other race commitments with a second season in the Toyota GAZOO Racing Vios Cup and Formula V1 Challenge.
His younger sister Shasha, on the other hand, looks forward to another season of racing if her schedule permits. The incoming college freshman is having to balance school and motorsports with hopes of excelling in both.
Miguel Quiñones: “This is my first time in Rotax MAX Challenge Malaysia and my goal is to find my rhythm and do well this weekend in Langkawi. It’s also a good warm up before the local Rotax MAX Challenge begins in the Philippines where I aim to defend my title as Karter of the Year.”
Shasha Quiñones: “We were able to train and compete in a number of national races in 2021 as restrictions were relaxed. I hope we can enter more events his year, balancing my time in karting and college. We’ll see. As for this weekend, I’m keeping an open mind and my goal is to at least catch up to my brother who’s also racing in Seniors.”
