Daryl DeLeon Taylor confirmed for TGR Vios Cup Ph debut with Obengers Racing

Tracing back to his Filipino roots, Daryl DeLeon Taylor is flying to the other side of the globe in 2022 in order to compete in the Toyota Gazoo Racing (TGR) Vios Cup in the Philippines. A deal has been confirmed with Obengers Racing that will see Daryl run the full season, making this his first competitive outing in the country.

The Filipino-British driver completed a 2-day test at the Clark International Speedway (CIS) back in March and immediately impressed the team with his performance. His outright pace, combined with his racing experience back in the UK, then promoted the organizers to lump him together with the 7 other drivers in the series’ top category. He expects the competition to be tight as the Super Sporting Class is reserved for the quickest, most experienced drivers in the series. Adding to the challenge, this will also be his first time to drive a touring car on a circuit he’s not familiar with.

He will then have to shuffle between the Philippines and the UK to fit this championship into his busy schedule. Thankfully, all the events of the TGR Vios Cup do not coincide with the Radical SR1 Cup’s calendar, allowing him to run in both.

As a matter of fact, he had to fly straight to the Clark International Speedway (CIS) right after his clean sweep of the SR1 Cup’s race at Snetterton for the TGR Vios Cup’s season opener on July 1/2.

“I am under no illusion that this weekend that this weekend will be a huge challenge for me, a track i’ve never raced at, in a car I haven’t driven, and against some competitors with years of experience in this event,” he commented. “Therefore if I can finish the weekend having learnt some of the skills and techniques to race these cars and have been able to show that I can adapt to something different then i would be more than happy. But if possible a podium in the Super Sporting Class would be fantastic.”

2022 TGR Vios Cup Calendar
Round 1 | July 1-2 (Clark International Speedway)
Round 2 | August 19-20 (Clark International Speedway)
Round 3 | November 18-19 (Clark International Speedway)

Despite his concerns, Daryl will be in good hands. Obengers Racing has won 3 out of the last 7 overall titles in the series, plus several class championship along the way. Hopefully, he can add to the team’s tally in 2022, which starts this weekend. Qualifying and Race 1 will take place on Friday followed by Race 2 and 3 on Saturday.

Daryl DeLeon Taylor: “I was looking to take on a new challenge, competing in Asia and in a type of car that I have never driven before. The TGR Vios Cup in the Philippines provided me with an ideal opportunity to develop these skills. It’s a very high profile championship and it attracts the best drivers from the region. I am also happy to have the support of one of the best teams around Obengers Racing.

Cosco Oben, Obengers Team Owner: “I’d like to welcome Daryl to the team and excited to see him race. We heard a lot of good things about him in racing abroad and I’m happy he decided to drive for the Obengers. I’m also glad that his schedule was able to match the Vios Cup calendar as i think it will be a good opportunity for his motorsport career. Looking forward to another successful season for the Obengers.”

Daryl DeLeon Taylor is supported by Train Maintenance Services (TMS).
