It’s grossly unethical to tease a man, get him all excited, then leave him blueballed. That’s just plain wrong. And in all honesty, we thought that Honda was going to do that to us after they tempted us with the all-new Civic Type R at the 2017 Manila International Auto Show (MIAS).
But lo and behold Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. (HCPI) delivered.
After months of speculation (and ambiguous replies from their PR), it’s officially official. The all-new Civic Type R, the one based off the latest 10th generation Civic, will be sold in the Philippines.
Mind you, unlike all the grey market imports we see on the road, this will be the first-ever Civic Type R offered by Honda’s local distributor. Best part is, it’ll be left-hand-drive from the factory. No conversions required. But do note that HCPI will only bring in 100 examples, in 2 colors: Championship White or Rallye Red.
Each one will carry a “suggested retail price” of P2,980,000, which is a lot to ask for a front-wheel-drive, 5-seater hatchback. But then again, this particular one packs a 2.0L VTEC Turbo with 310 hp and 400 Nm of Torque, 6-speed manual transmission, limited-slip diff, 350 mm 4-piston Brembo brakes, and adaptive dampers. Put all these together with a bespoke chassis, aerodynamic body, and wide 245/30 R20 tires and you’ll get a hot hatch capable of lapping the Nürburgring Nordschelife in 7 mins 43.8 secs.
In comparison, that makes it P482,000 more than a Subaru WRX STI and P175,000 cheaper than a Ford Mustang V8.
If you desperately want one, get your bank accounts ready as Honda Car dealerships will begin accepting reservations on July 11, 2017. And if you’re part of the lucky 100, expect your prized Civic Type R to arrive sometime this September.
