Underneath the skin, we all know that the all-new Honda BR-V is simply a Mobilio on stilts and protein shakes. But for some reason, it’s 100% more likable. Not that the Mobilio isn’t. It’s just that we don’t normally get 7-seater SUVs in this country that can be bought for less than P1-million.
P989,000 will already get you the “entry-level” 1.5 S CVT. It’ll happily fit 7 passengers plus luggage, run economically with its frugal 1.5L 4-cylinder i-VTEC engine with CVT, and drive over any obstacles less than 201 mm in height. Although it might not be a real “SUV” in terms of its off-road abilities, at least it looks the part. Because that’s what really matters these days, right?
Just take a look at the Ford EcoSport, Nissan Juke, Mazda CX-3, and Chevrolet Trax. All those aren’t real SUVs either, but at least the BR-V can seat 2 extra passengers.
The basic equipment here is also not as basic as you might think. 16-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, roof rails, a 7-inch touch screen infotainment system, digital A/C controls, and rear A/C are all standard. Honda didn’t skimp on safety either. All BR-V versions have dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, Hill Start Assist (HSA), Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), and ISOFIX child seats.
The only add-ons the top-of-the-line 1.5 V Navi CVT get are power folding side mirrors, push button start, leather seats, climate control, navigation system, and paddle shifters. These are features we can live without unless you’re willing to pay an extra P130,000.
A similarly-equipped Mobilio is cheaper by P102,000, but the BR-V is taller, wider, longer, and to some extent better looking inside and out. We also prefer to be seen driving a subcompact SUV rather than a mommy-MPV. No offense.
