Daryl DeLeon Taylor crowned SR1 Cup UK champion in title decider at Donington

Coming into the season ender with a 54 point lead at Donington Park, Daryl DeLeon Taylor only needed to finish 4th or higher to take the 2022 title. His championship hopes, however, nearly slipped through his fingers after an early DNF. But the Filipino-British driver later turned things around with a 2nd place finish to secure him the Radical SR1 Cup UK crown.

The weekend was not trouble-free for Daryl. His white-and-gold #2 SR1 encountered an upright failure followed by a snapped wishbone during testing, that while easy to repair, would have been costly if it were to happen during a race. Valour Racing was able to quickly sort things out and sent the 17-year-old out in time for Qualifying.

As expected, Daryl was again the fastest SR1 driver around the 4.020 km circuit. He set a time of 1:34.302, which was enough to put him on pole for both races.

With his streak of podium finishes this year, Race 1 should have been and easy lights-to-flag victory with the title in tow. But a slow start dropped him to P4 before fighting back to regain 2 spots on just the opening lap. Daryl then began his chase for the lead and the championship, that was until another driver lost control and collided with the #2 machine. Unfortunately, the impact caused terminal damage that forced Daryl out of the race.

Despite the DNF, his championship hopes was still very much alive. Daryl would again start from pole in Race 2 and this time stayed in the lead over the next few laps. However, he knew that he couldn’t quite match the pace of the car behind and instead of taking risks just to stay in front, Daryl let his closest title rival Ben Caisley go by because as long as he can finish 4th or higher, the title was his. A safety car period then bunched the entire field up where he found himself defending for position after the restart. After spending a few tense laps trading places, Daryl eventually opened a comfortable gap as he headed towards the chequered flag in 2nd to become the 2022 Radical SR1 Cup UK Champion.

Looking back at the season, Daryl DeLeon Taylor would collect 7 race wins and 2 podium finishes to claim the 2022 title by 8 points.

Daryl DeLeon Taylor: “On the 10th anniversary of the championship and also the 25th anniversary of Radical Motorsport, I’m very proud to be crowned the 2022 SR1 British Champion. I worked really hard for it even beating professional and factory drivers, but I must acknowledge that it would be impossible for me to do this without the support and hard work from everyone from Valour Racing. I would also like to thank Radical Motorsport for an amazing series and all of their on and off track support.”
