How to make an MX-5 ND fit for racing duty in the Miata Spec Series

What if we told you that the perfect sports car does exist, one that you can drive daily on weekdays and race on track during weekends? It also happens to be lightweight, rear-wheel-drive, and comes with a foldable soft top. Developed and built by RaceGAS Dynamics, you can now buy a race-ready MX-5 ND and compete in the much-anticipated Miata Spec Series. Yet, it remains street-legal so owners can still enjoy them on public roads.

Each one is based on a road-going MX-5 ND with a 6-speed manual transmission. RaceGAS Dynamics, who’s also the race promoter and organizer, then fits aftermarket components and necessary safety equipment to make them eligible for their 6-round one-make-series.

Once done, they then sell these ‘cup cars’ with a tag price of P2.5-million (inclusive of racing suit, shoes, and gloves). While you CANNOT simply convert any MX-5 ND by yourself and enter the series, here are all the parts that goes into making a Miata fit for racing duty.

In spite of all these upgrades, RaceGAS Dynamics has opted to retain the original 2.0L 4-cylinder engine, brakes, and bodywork completely stock. But since the cars are all identically spec’d and evenly matched, we’re quite confident that the level of competition will be really really high and the on-track action to be really really close.

“Ever since I began my racing career, I have always wanted to create a sports car series that allows the cars’ owners to enjoy their rides whether on the track or on the road,” shares Allan Uy, President of RaceGAS Dynamics. “With the Mazda MX-5, we are able to realize this dream. With its amazing driving dynamics, inherently light platform, as well as its potent engine, drivetrain and rear-wheel drive configuration, Miata Spec Series participants will get the enjoy the pureness of sports car racing at a reasonable cost.”

The Miata Spec Series was ‘supposed’ to kick off its inaugural 2020 season by May. But with the current global pandemic, who’s to say whether the championship will be re-scheduled or push through as planned. But what we do know is that there are still Miata Spec Series ‘cup cars’ up for grabs, which you can snap up by reaching out to RaceGAS Dynamics at racegasdynamics1@gmail.com.
