The Philippines has a rich heritage in motorsports. Names such as Pocholo Ramirez, Dante Silverio, and Mandy Eduque were the the stuff of legends back in the ’60s and ’70s. There were also events like the Manila Grand Prix, Greenhills Grand Prix, and The Gedol Great Philippine Rally that put the country on the global map. But for most of us who weren’t even born yet at the time, we now have a chance to rediscover the golden age of Philippine motorsport.
‘Racing with Legends’ is a one-hour movie documentary that tells that story by those who were there. And it’s now available on YouTube.
Released back in 2013, the project is a collaboration between three talented individuals: Director and Editor Steven Flor, Writer and Producer Martin Galan, and Sound Recording Specialist Mark Laccay. To put together this film, they’ve sorted through more than 200 hours of lost footage and photos from private collections, and interviewed racing legends to get an in depth view of what it was like to race back in the glory days.
Don’t think that this is merely a documentary of what transpired in the past. It’s a dire attempt to capture the emotions of the Filipino race car drivers and organizers that helped shape the country’s rich motor racing heritage.
What was once only available on DVD can now be watched on YouTube. The movie was cut up into 15 short clips, but we’ve managed to create a playlist so you can enjoy it seamlessly from start to end below.
